Itinerary Details
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer
After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) our guide will meet you with big smiles and transfer you to your hotel in the quaint town of Moshi or Marangu just on the foot of the Highest Mountain in Africa. This evening is dedicated to the pre-climb briefing, where you meet your guide, review gear, and mentally prepare for the ascent of the "Roof of Africa." Rest and hydration are paramount.
- π¨ Moshi/Marangu
Day 2: Mandara Hut
The journey begins with a drive to the Marangu Gate for registration. We then step onto a winding trail that cuts through the lush, emerald green of the Montane Rainforest Zone. This section is a gentle, consistent climb, famous for its hanging mosses and occasional sightings of Blue Monkeys. After 4β5 hours, we arrive at the first overnight stop, Mandara Hut, where we settle into our basic A-frame dormitory huts.
- π¨ Mandara Hut
Day 3: Horombo Hut
We leave the forest behind and emerge into the striking Moorland Zone. The path becomes more exposed and rocky, offering distant views of Kibo's peak and the jagged Mawenzi spire on a clear day. Giant lobelias and groundsels begin to dominate the landscape. The 5β7 hour trek is rewarded with arrival at the bustling Horombo Hut, a village of huts where ascending and descending climbers cross paths.
- π¨ Horombo
Day 4: Acclimatisation Day at Horombo Hut
This extra day is the secret weapon of the 7-day Marangu route. Instead of pushing higher, we embark on a crucial "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi Ridge (up to approx. 14,000Β ft). We spend a couple of hours absorbing the altitude, taking in the views of the Mawenzi peak, before descending back to the familiar comfort of Horombo Hut to sleep. This strategic day significantly improves summit chances.
- π¨ Horombo
Day 5: Kibo Hut
Leaving Horombo, we traverse the vast, high-altitude desert known as The Saddleβa stark, desolate plain linking the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The terrain is rocky and the air is noticeably thinner. After 5β7 hours, we reach Kibo Hut, a very basic stone structure. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing all your gear for the midnight summit push. Sleep is minimal and essential.
- π¨ Kibo Hut
Day 6: Summit Day
Waking before midnight, we begin the long, steep, cold climb over loose volcanic scree towards the crater rim. This is the ultimate test of endurance, moving "pole pole" (slowly, slowly). We aim to reach Gillman's Point or Stella Point just before dawn to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. The final hour's walk to Uhuru Peak is along the snow-covered crater rim. After a brief celebration, the long descent begins, first back to Kibo Hut for a short break, then all the way down to the relative warmth of Horombo Hut for a much-deserved sleep.
- π¨ Horombo
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
he final day is a long, jubilant descent. We retrace our steps through the familiar Moorland Zone, enjoying the ease of breathing with every meter lost in altitude. We stop briefly at Mandara Hut before continuing the final stretch through the rainforest. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, we sign out and receive official summit certificates. You are then transferred back to your hotel in Marangu/Moshi.
- π¨ Marangu/Moshi
