KILIMANJARO TREKKING - RONGAI ROUTE
8 days β’ 4 People and above β’ From $ 2,750 β’ Tanzania
Overview
The Rongai Route is a moderate and highly recommended trekking path on Mount Kilimanjaro, primarily characterized by its unique northern approach.
Here is a brief overview:
Northern Approach: It is the only route that begins from the northern side of the mountain, near the Kenyan border. This means it is historically less frequented, offering a quieter, more remote wilderness experience.
Gradual Ascent: The Rongai offers a more gradual slope on its ascent days, which contributes to its high summit success rate (especially on the 7-day itinerary) as it allows for steady acclimatization.
Scenery & Terrain: The climb starts in the dense rainforest zone, but quickly transitions into drier, high-altitude moorland and the alpine desert of The Saddle, the barren land between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. A major highlight is camping at Mawenzi Tarn, directly beneath the dramatic, jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak.
Acclimatization: The 7-day version includes a dedicated acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn, which is crucial for maximizing success.
Summit & Descent: The final ascent to Uhuru Peak is made from Kibo Hut and is the same steep, challenging route used by the Marangu Route climbers. However, the trek does not retrace its steps; the descent is made entirely down the popular Marangu Route on the southeastern side of the mountain.
Best For: Those who prefer a quieter trail, hikers who want a more gradual incline, and those climbing during the traditional rainy season (as the north side receives less precipitation).
