Marangu Route Overview

The Marangu Route is the oldest, most established, and one of the most popular paths up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is often nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route" due to its relative simplicity compared to other routes and the fact that basic supplies (including, in the past, Coca-Cola) were available for purchase in the huts.

Key Features of the Marangu Route:

Accommodation in Huts: The Marangu Route is the only route on Kilimanjaro to offer accommodation in permanent, dormitory-style mountain huts (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts), which are equipped with mattresses and pillows. This is a major advantage for climbers who prefer not to camp.

Gradual, Direct Ascent: The trail is known for a more gradual and straightforward path with very few steep climbs, making the daily trekking hours moderate.

Acclimatization Challenge: Despite the easier path, the route is typically climbed in just 5 or 6 days. The shorter duration, especially the 5-day option, makes proper altitude acclimatization difficult, resulting in a lower overall summit success rate compared to longer routes. The recommended 6-day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut to significantly increase your chances of reaching the summit.

Same Ascent and Descent Path: Trekkers ascend and descend along the same trail, meaning the scenery is less varied than on other routes. However, the path still passes through four distinct climatic zones: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.

Summit Approach: The final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, is launched from Kibo Hut (4,700m) and involves a challenging midnight climb over scree to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim.

Itinerary Details

Day 0: Arrival and Preparation

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly met by a representative of Kilimanjaro Escapes Co. Ltd and transferred to your accommodation in Moshi or Marangu. The remainder of the day is dedicated to resting and attending a vital pre-climb briefing with your Head Guide. During this session, the guide will meticulously review your gear, check your park documents, and outline the logistical and safety procedures for the days ahead, ensuring you are well-prepared for your mountain adventure before you get an early night’s sleep.

  • 🍴 Meals: B, L, D
  • 🏨 Moshi/Marangu
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

After breakfast, you will be driven to the Marangu Gate (1,860m), where registration formalities take place. The trek begins with a steady, uphill walk through the lush montane rainforest zone, characterized by high humidity, moss-covered trees, and rich biodiversity. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys and local birdlife as you ascend. The path is well-maintained and relatively gentle, leading you to the Mandara Huts, the first set of permanent wooden A-frame shelters on the mountain. After settling in, there is an optional short side trip to the nearby Maundi Crater for an initial, rewarding view of the plains below.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Today's journey transitions out of the dense forest and into the open, rolling landscape of the heath and moorland zone. As the foliage thins, the giant heathers and the unique, towering Erica and Lobelia plants begin to dominate the scenery. The path involves a moderate, steady climb, with the air becoming noticeably thinner. On a clear day, you will be rewarded with your first spectacular, expansive views of Kibo Peak (the main summit) and the jagged Mawenzi Peak. The day concludes upon arrival at Horombo Hut, a much larger cluster of huts nestled on a small plateau.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)

This essential day is spent acclimatizing to the higher altitude, a vital practice strongly recommended by Kilimanjaro Escapes Co. Ltd to significantly increase your summit success rate. You will undertake a non-strenuous, 4- to 5-hour acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Hut (or the stunning Zebra Rocks) before returning to Horombo Hut. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy allows your body to better adapt to the reduced oxygen while ensuring you get to sleep at the same comfortable altitude, providing both physical conditioning and incredible photographic opportunities of the two peaks.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

The trek today is a considerable climb into the desolate, high-altitude alpine desert zone, leaving all large vegetation behind. The trail crosses the wide, lunar-like expanse of The Saddle, a rocky, barren plateau that connects the towering Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This section is dry, windy, and involves a gradual but continuous incline. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, the final base camp, you will immediately notice the intense cold and the imposing presence of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to resting, hydrating, and preparing your gear for the demanding summit attempt, which will begin shortly after midnight.

  • 🏨 Kibo Hut
Day - Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

The longest and most challenging day of the climb begins around midnight. The summit push is a grueling, slow ascent over loose volcanic scree in the pitch darkness, guided only by headlamps. After several hours of persistent climbing, you will reach Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim just in time to witness a spectacular African sunrise. The final stretch to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point on the continent, is a gradual traverse along the snow-covered crater rim. After capturing the obligatory summit photos, the long descent begins, retracing your steps back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest and then continuing all the way down to the welcoming lower altitude and warmth of Horombo Hut for a well-deserved night's sleep.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860m)

Your final day on the mountain is an easy but long 5- to 7-hour descent. You will walk through the familiar moorland, quickly re-entering the oxygen-rich environment of the beautiful rainforest. The path takes you directly back down to the Marangu Gate, where you will sign out of the national park, officially completing your climb. Here, your Head Guide will present you with your official government summit certificate (gold for Uhuru, green for Gilman's Point). A private transfer will be waiting to take you and your team back to your hotel for a hot shower, a final celebration, and a hearty dinner, marking the successful end of your expedition with Kilimanjaro Escapes Co. Ltd.
