Tarangire National Park, located in northern Tanzania just a few hours’ drive from Arusha, is a hidden gem often overshadowed by its famous neighbors. Yet, it offers one of the most authentic safari experiences in East Africa. Known for its vast landscapes dotted with ancient baobab trees and sweeping savannahs, Tarangire is a haven for wildlife lovers seeking a quieter, less crowded escape.
The park is most famous for its large elephant herds — among the biggest in Tanzania — often seen wandering gracefully across the plains. During the dry season (June to October), Tarangire becomes a magnet for animals as thousands of zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and antelopes gather around the Tarangire River, the park’s lifeline. Predators such as lions and leopards follow close behind, creating thrilling game-viewing opportunities.

Unique Character

What makes Tarangire truly special is its mix of habitats: grassy savannahs, acacia woodlands, river valleys, and seasonal swamps that attract over 500 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The park’s peaceful atmosphere and striking scenery, combined with its rich wildlife, give visitors a more intimate and personal safari experience compared to the busier northern circuit parks.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (June to October) is the best time to visit Tarangire, when animals gather in huge numbers around the river and wildlife sightings are at their peak. The green season (November to May), though quieter, transforms the park into a lush paradise, with excellent birdwatching and beautiful landscapes.
