Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara's stunning setting is defined by its diverse habitats, which range from a shimmering soda lake to dense groundwater forests, vast grassy plains, and rugged acacia woodlands. The park's centerpiece is the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara, which expands and contracts with the seasons. At its fullest, the lake can cover two-thirds of the park, becoming a magnet for a spectacular array of birdlife.

Lake Manyara is perhaps most famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavioral trait only seen in a few other places in Africa. These lions, which are believed to climb trees to escape the heat and tsetse flies, or to gain a better vantage point for spotting prey, can often be seen lounging on the branches of acacia and fig trees, providing a truly unique and memorable photographic opportunity.

Despite its relatively compact size, Lake Manyara boasts a remarkable concentration of wildlife. The park is home to one of the highest concentrations of elephants in all of Tanzania, and you can often see large herds in the forests and on the open plains. Other animals you'll likely encounter include large troops of baboons, graceful giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, and impalas. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 species recorded.
