A Gem on the Great Rift Valley
Tucked beneath the dramatic cliffs of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is a small but incredibly diverse and vibrant part of Tanzania's renowned Northern Safari Circuit. This ecological gem is a microcosm of East Africa's rich biodiversity, offering a unique safari experience that beautifully complements the vast landscapes of the Serengeti and the epic scale of the Ngorongoro Crater.

A Unique Ecosystem

Lake Manyara's stunning setting is defined by its diverse habitats, which range from a shimmering soda lake to dense groundwater forests, vast grassy plains, and rugged acacia woodlands. The park's centerpiece is the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara, which expands and contracts with the seasons. At its fullest, the lake can cover two-thirds of the park, becoming a magnet for a spectacular array of birdlife.

Famous Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara is perhaps most famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavioral trait only seen in a few other places in Africa. These lions, which are believed to climb trees to escape the heat and tsetse flies, or to gain a better vantage point for spotting prey, can often be seen lounging on the branches of acacia and fig trees, providing a truly unique and memorable photographic opportunity.

Abundant Wildlife and Birdlife

Despite its relatively compact size, Lake Manyara boasts a remarkable concentration of wildlife. The park is home to one of the highest concentrations of elephants in all of Tanzania, and you can often see large herds in the forests and on the open plains. Other animals you'll likely encounter include large troops of baboons, graceful giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, and impalas. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 species recorded. During the wet season, the lake's shores are painted a brilliant pink by thousands of Lesser Flamingos, a truly breathtaking sight.

Beyond the Game Drive: Tailored Experiences

At Kilimanjaro Escapes, we believe in crafting experiences that go beyond the ordinary. In Lake Manyara, you can opt for activities that offer a new perspective:

Night Game Drives: As one of the few national parks in Tanzania offering this, you can witness the park's nocturnal world come to life, from the glow of a leopard's eyes to the subtle movements of civets.

Canoeing on the Lake: For a truly peaceful experience, paddle on the lake's calm waters for a close-up view of hippos and a myriad of water birds.

Treetop Walkway: Get a bird's-eye view of the forest canopy, a unique and thrilling way to see the park's incredible biodiversity.

Combining a safari in Lake Manyara with your Kilimanjaro expedition ensures your journey is filled with a rich diversity of landscapes, challenges, and unforgettable moments.
